Ready for the journey to Machu Picchu. Mike and Den please note the bag!
Our guide Juan met us at the hotel and we set off for the train station a few minutes stroll away. The journey iteself is spectacular as the line follows the river through a steep sided gorge.
An hour and a half later, at Aguas Calientes, Juan led us to the waiting buses and we headed up the steep, twisting road. The bus stopped at the Sanctuary Lodge hotel where we checked in, left our bags and entered the site. You see nothing at first, then turn a corner and there it is! We spent over 2 hours with Juan as he guided us round the site. At first the clouds obscured some of it - especially Huayna Picchu, but gradually the sun burnt its way through and the views were breathtaking.
Lunchtime - and we said goodbye to Juan before having a look at our room. The terrace with a view of Huayna Picchu was fairly impressive!
After lunch we decided to head for the Sun Gate. The hotel guide said it was a moderate walk with a level path. No mention of the hundreds of steep steps. Someone's got a sense of humour! Well worth the effort though because the views were incredible and we were able to look down on our hotel room and terrace.
We did it! And the walk back down was much easier!
A wonderful day! A great meal and another Pisco sour to finish.
